A look at what’s been going on at Church on the Street in October:

Domestic Violence Against Women & Girls Workshops

Church on the Street is running a series of workshops to support women who have experienced domestic violence, funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s campaign to end Violence Against Women and Girls.

Our Partnerships Lead, Nicola, and Lead Pastor, Emma, have been working closely together to coordinate this vital project, supporting some of the most vulnerable women in our community.

The sessions are designed to provide a safe, non-judgemental space where women can be open, honest, and begin to explore key themes such as self-worth, personal boundaries, and safety. On alternate weeks, specialist guest speakers lead workshops focused on skill-building and healing from past trauma.

These speakers come from a range of professional backgrounds, including GPs, police officers, nurses, and domestic violence specialists. So far, 15 women have regularly attended the group, sharing that the space has offered a rare opportunity for honest conversation, connection, and support without fear of judgement.

If you would like to attend the group please feel free to come along to Church on the Street, Bethesda Street Wednesdays at 1pm.

The following sessions are coming up:

  • Empowerment Through Sharing
  • Practical Steps to Stay Safe
  • Caring for Mind & Body
  • Who Can Help?
  • Confidence & Advocacy
  • Parenting & Breaking Patterns
  • Reflection & Future Planning

Hopping over to Holland

Bishop Michael has been off to Holland to celebrate the translation of his first book “Blown Away” into Dutch. Another place ticked off the map for Mick and another opportunity to spread the gospel around the world.

The visit has not been a holiday though, filled with workshops, preaching, speaking engagements and meetings Mick has been busy sharing the good news of Jesus Christ everywhere he goes.

IPP Prisoners: Calling out Complicity

We are honoured to share that Pastor Clara and Pastor Mick have been invited to give statements at the most recent Parliamentary meeting regarding Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentences. This significant invitation follows the latest submission from the IPP Committee in Action, whose tireless advocacy has brought this issue to the forefront once again.

The meeting brings together a powerful coalition of voices, including human rights experts, members of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, and a wide range of stakeholders and officials.

Those attending the meeting include: Bambos Charalambous MP, The Chair of the Parole Board, Lord Moylan, Lord Woodley, Baroness Claire Fox, Lord Blunkett, Kim Johnson MP, NAPO (Trade Union and Professional Association for Family Court and Probation Staff), Human Rights Barrister Muin Boase, Members of the press, The Director of INQUEST, Prisons Minister James Timpson, Lord Chancellor David Lammy, Richard Ratcliffe, Liz Saville Roberts MP, Akiko Hart (Liberty), Lee (Care After Combat), Tom Wheatley (Prison Governors’ Association), Andrew Morris, Marc Conway, Bishop Michael Fleming, Family members of IPP prisoners.

The European Convention on Human Rights has recently raised serious concerns about the treatment of IPP prisoners, with some practices potentially amounting to torture. For the first time, the UK government has agreed to meet directly with all family members of IPP prisoners — a major milestone in the campaign for justice.

Pastor Clara shared:

“It is an honour and a privilege to speak again on the IPP injustice on behalf of the families. It is my hope that from this meeting, mercy will be shown. I want to thank the IPP Committee in Action for their tireless campaigning to make this moment possible.”

Encouraging Women in Their Walk with Christ

Pastor Emma with Ruth and Micah from Living Faith Church another church in The International Christian Church Network.

Pastor Emma was recently invited to speak at the Ladies’ Afternoon Tea hosted by Living Faith Church. A group of women from Church on the Street joined her for a wonderful afternoon of fellowship, fun, and connection.

The event featured games like bingo, shared food, and heartfelt conversation, creating a welcoming space to connect with women in the Orrell area. It was also a meaningful opportunity to build relationships and extend support beyond our immediate community.

We are delighted to partner with another church within The International Church Network (TICCN) and see this as a valuable opportunity to strengthen unity and continue advancing the work of God’s kingdom together.

Pastor Joanne who went along said:

“I have grown a deeper love of Pastor Emma hearing her story. Sometimes, it can feel that Emma is untouchable, but hearing her be vulnerable reminds me that we’re all one in Christ Jesus.”

“I’ve never laughed so much, I had a brilliant time.”

Breast Screening for Vulnerable Women

As part of our ongoing partnership with the NHS, we were pleased to welcome a fifth-year medical student, Adeela, who joined us to gain insight into how community-based initiatives can positively impact both patients and the healthcare system.

During her time with us, Adeela engaged with our Women of Worth group, leading an important conversation about the value of breast screening. She also provided hands-on guidance, empowering some of the women by teaching them how to perform self-checks.

We’re incredibly grateful for Adeela’s time, dedication, and the knowledge she shared in supporting women to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health.

A Great Big Thank You

Previously Pastor Mick visited Nigeria and spoke at a church who have now kindly donated an abundance of items to help us keep the practical elements of the charity running.

The charity donated a whole variety of items for work all across the charity in different locations including:

  • Food Bank Items
  • Clothing Bank supplies
  • Toiletries
  • Items to tackle Child Poverty
  • Supplies for support workers
  • Office Supplies

We are so incredibly grateful for the gifts which will allow us to continue these projects and give dignity to those in need. To partner with other charities internationally is a blessing

Pastor Emma said:

“I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of Emmanuel TV in providing exactly what we need to serve our community. It’s remarkable that these donations have come all the way from Africa to Burnley.”

A Prayer

God of all nations, mighty creator and King.
May your name be exalted among the people,
May your love shine in the darkness silencing injustice.

Thank you for your grace that pours out in abundance
Thank you that your dwelling place is among your people.

We ask that your truth reigns throughout the earth and your mercy prevails,
Protect the workers of your field, keep us under the shadow of your wings.

Amen

We cannot continue to do the work we do without your generous support:
